Putting in carpet may be just what you need to add that bit of style and comfort to your home.

Carpets come in a variety of colors, types, and designs, so you have to choose the one that best fits your home and your life. But just how do you go about choosing the right carpet for your home, especially if you tend to be a bit hard on whatever’s under your feet?

When high-traffic areas, dirt, pets or children are involved, you will want a carpet that offers not only style, but also serious durability and ease of cleaning. Below are some simple tips that can help you choose a carpet that will stand up to your demands.

  1.   Make sure the carpets you choose can stand up to the high-traffic areas of your home. If you want to keep your carpet looking good for a long time, choose one that can withstand heavy foot traffic, and won’t show dirt easily. You especially want to focus on the color and the thickness. Choose carpets with a short pile height, a dark color that can conceal dirt, and anti-stain properties. You certainly don’t want to end up with stains or with having to clean your carpets too often.
  2.   Avoid super-thick carpets.  Lush and plush carpets look great in certain areas of a home, but in high-traffic areas, it’s likely to show wear and tear early. Thick carpet is also not a good idea if you have pets, because getting pet hair out of it can quickly become a nightmare. You can avoid that issue altogether by choosing thinner carpets. If you have pets, solid cut pile carpet is a better choice because it has a soft, attractive appearance, but it’s also flat, which makes cleaning off pet hair a lot easier.
  3.   You want a carpet that is high on looks, but low on maintenance. Choose carpets with textured styles, as these are durable and easier to maintain. Commercial grade carpets are more resilient and can withstand heavy traffic, but don’t think you’ll be compromising on style, because they also look stylish and plush.

You want a carpet that looks good and is also suited to the specific requirements of your home. That means choosing carpets that fits your lifestyle. If it’s going to be in a play area for your kids, you want to choose a heavier, denser carpet so it will be comfortable to lie on.  However, if you have an area where there’s not a lot of traffic, then it’s okay to get the plush carpet with the luxurious feel.

These are just a few of the things you want to think through when you’re trying to find the right carpet for your home. Take the time to learn about the different styles, and think about using a mix of colors and styles that complement each other and fit the space. Your carpet will likely be a part of your home for many years to come. We hope we have started you on your way to finding the perfect one for you and your family.
