Choosing the perfect custom interior door
Consider your home’s style
Whether you live in a mid-century modern abode or a charming Tudor home, the style of your home is the first thing you should consider. Doors can complement or completely undermine the hard work you put into decorating the rest of your home! If you’re remodeling, decide on the style you’re trying to create before selecting your doors – or let your favorite doors inspire you!
Once your preferred style is established, you can start to narrow down your options. Mid-century modern tends to be comprised of clean edges and lines and minimal glass panes. Tudors and Victorian homes trend more toward arched doorways and windows with intricate glass designs. Rustic farmhouse designs are complemented by clear glass panes and muted wood tones in heavy wood grains.
Decide what level of privacy you’re comfortable with
When you’re choosing doors, your desired level of privacy can be a huge deciding factor. You may love the look of fully transparent, all-glass windows, but that can be a problem if you’re installing them between the bathroom and the bedroom or to a workspace or workout room. Consider what goes on in each room of your house and decide if full-glass or partial glass is even an option.
If you’re retired and your kids are out of the house, maybe you could get away with a cheeky frosted-glass door into the master bath. Otherwise, solid interior doors may be your best bet.
Consider the door’s location
This feels like a no-brainer, but your door’s design will often be at least partially decided by its location. Double French doors are very grand, but they can feel overly formal leading to a playroom. And on an even more practical note, you’ll also need to consider the height of your ceilings, whether the door swings in or out, and how many doors are in a visitor’s line of sight at once.
It may feel fun and quirky, but having a different style door to every bedroom on the landing can really damage the value of your home for buyers with less modern, funky taste. But on the other hand, if this is your forever retirement home and you want to have some fun – go for it! What’s important is that you’re happy (although our design team will likely fight you on this one).
Location can also determine the material your door is made from. Rooms that need more soundproofing, like offices and playrooms, can get an extra layer of quiet if you use solid wood doors that absorb the sound. On the other hand, you may want the entrance to your sunroom to get plenty of light, in which case full-glass French doors make perfect sense. Think about the purpose of the room – and the door – to help you create a functional and attractive design.
Think about uniformity and first impressions
While the idea of adding some wow factor to every door is appealing, it’s often in better taste to decide on a few key doors that should command attention. Our custom interior door designs allow you to draw focus to key areas – the master bedroom, the master bath, the door to the sunroom, or the door to the formal dining room. Keeping the rest of your indoor doors uniform adds to the wow factor of your key focal points.
Remember – when everything is special, nothing is special. Often, you should start with exterior doors and then work your way inwards when you’re deciding on door designs.
